Tech BFFs~ Goodreads

BFF is an acronym for “Best Friend Forever.” These websites and tips are so good that they will become your technology BFFs!

Goodreads

“Goodreads is the largest social network for readers in the world. We have more than
3,100,000 members who have added more than 83,000,000 books to their shelves. A
place for casual readers and bona-fide bookworms alike, Goodreads members recommend
books, compare what they are reading, keep track of what they’ve read and would like
to read, form book clubs and much more. Goodreads was launched in December 2006.”

The reason Goodreads has earned the Website BFF distinction is because it encourages reading and reviewing of books. Readers may link there books to those of Facebook friends and other friend groups.

One suggestion for classroom use would be to create a Class Goodreads page.

Once you sign-up and sign-in, here is a fine example of one Goodreads blogger called Imagination in Focus

The number of words an average person consumes–meaning, reads, or hears everyday.

Amazingly, the amount we read has triped from 1980-2008.

Can this also be said of teaching?

Erma Bombeck knew both the joys and sadness of having children. Some years ago she wrote, “I see children as kites.  You spend a lifetime trying to get them off the ground.  You run with them until you’re both breathless — they crash — they hit the rooftop — you patch and comfort, adjust and teach.  You watch them lifted by the wind and assure them that someday they’ll fly. Finally they are airborne: they need more string and you keep letting it out.  But with each twist of the ball of twine, there is a sadness that goes with joy.  The kite becomes more distant, and you know it won’t be long before that beautiful creature will snap the lifeline that binds you together and will soar as it is meant to soar, free and alone.  Only then do you know that you did your job.”
