Summer To-Do List: Join a Virtual Book Club and/or Join the Summer Reading Clubs @ Your Library!
It’s officially summer and libraries across the country have summer reading clubs, groups, ‘fests, and promotions. Want to save a tree this summer? Go online and join a reading group. Goodreads has many, many, many engaging and welcoming reading clubs. I’ve blogged previously about the one I’m in and it is the best one!!
Do you prefer to kick it old school? Reading clubs are usually divided by age: (up to Grade 5), the Teen Reading Club (Grades 6-12), and the Adult Reading Club (Ages 18+) and by genre. There’s something for everyone this summer, and often you’ll have the chance to earn prizes for continuing to read during the summer break.
Don’t pass up on all of the great activities because, whatever you do, don’t be caught not being a part of our club!

“When you sit in front of a kindergartner with a stopwatch in your hand, and she can’t bark out letters fast enough to earn the score of proficient, and you’re recording all of it, you aren’t teaching her to read, you’re teaching her to hate reading.”
~Philip Kovacs, Associate Professor of Education at the University Alabama at Huntsville.

We’ve had a great orientation to our Spring Digital Reading Course from PBS TeacherLine. It’s been great to virtually meet each of you! I have enjoyed getting to know you in our Introduction Forums. We are all connecting and learning, each from a different U.S. state at times that are most convenient for us.
Today begins our first week! I so appreciate the emphasis this week on the Joyful aspect of Reading. Please check your email or the course Emails Forum for my Week 1 Tips Email.
I am taking the idea of Joyful reading to heart and this Friday, I am scheduling a “Read Only” morning. I plan to turn off all technology and read! (Good thing I’m on Spring Break or it would be curtains at the university!)

There are too many books I haven’t read, too many places I haven’t seen, too many memories I haven’t kept long enough.

“If the true learning objective is to ignite a student’s passion for literature and provide an opportunity to demonstrate understanding through a variety of modalities, then maybe it’s time to move beyond the book report.” ~ Beth Holland, Projects to Engage Middle School Readers
This quote, like last weekend’s quote, was suggested by one of the teachers in the PBS course I facilitate. Thank you, K.L.!

Extremely thankful for teachers, this weekend! This weekend’s quote shared by a teacher in the online course I facilitate (Thank you, E.M.!)
“The literacy-rich environment also provides students with opportunities to engage with and see adults interact with print allowing students to build their skills in understanding the conventions, purposes, and functions of print. “Children learn how to attend to language and apply this knowledge to literacy situations by interacting with others who model language functions” (Gunn, Simmons, & Kameenui, 1995, 11).

It is my belief that books are living things…. And as living things, they need to be protected. ~Holly Black

If you want kids to love reading, set up opportunities for kids to work together and with you around books. If you want them to be lifelong readers, work with them to encourage them to build reading into their daily life when away from school. If you want them to care about books, give them a chance to take on books that might be too hard for them. Give them ways to gain social rewards for using the knowledge that they gain from such reading. ~Tim Shanahan on Literacy, in this post
